I hearing he was in Memphis on Sept 1 and just trying to figure out how this would work. I can't find any newspaper accounts of Memphis or Omaha. Thanks.John Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04391313393222271260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7476836446638612873.post-22251595059196221402018-09-21T19:20:39.630-05:002018-09-21T19:20:39.630-05:00Thanks for the post, Dean. Is the work that Phillip Meyers did do for mediums discussed in House of Mystery? Can you recommend another source on historic fake medium use of magic props? I'm not sure when I'll be able to post as I'm leaving town and they'll arrive while I'm gone. But I'm thinking of it as a performer who is trying to find his way, often going back and forth on material. Sometimes it takes a single person to say 'hey do this' even when you've done it before, but it's that opinion from someone other than yourself that makes you go, yep, they're right. But all 4 of your points make total sense to me as well. Mainly because:

1. All accounts of Houdini's act before the meeting say he's doing the challenge handcuffs and Metamorphosis. There's no mention of superfluous magic. Houdini appears to have honed his act before Beck.

2. The telegram. Yeah, it seems to imply that Beck did not see him in St. Paul. HH says "this telegram changed my whole life's journey." The telegram. Not the meeting and sage advice. I think an agent might have seen HH and this telegram came out of the blue. Beck would catch the act at some point and they would then talk contracts.

3. The first account of Beck seeing/meeting HH is in Dec. 1899 in Cincinnati. That's when they sign their 3 year contract.

4. The story appears in Kellock.John Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04391313393222271260noreply@blogger.com
